August 2010

Friends.

People follow people.  One of my mentors frequently reminds me of this fact.  Yes, words do matter, as do ideas, but we are challenged and shaped, for good or ill, by the people who have occupied some place in our lives.

JFK and Senator Kennedy’s sister, Eunice Shriver, did so much for so many.  Her son and my good friend (and Honorary PathNorth member), Tim Shriver continues her legacy by guiding the incredible global work of Special Olympics.  It is powerful in its simplicity.  Individuals with intellectual disabilities are people who should be with us all at life’s table to fully and equally share in the journey.

Instead of writing an August Musing, I simply want to draw attention to Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day coming up in September.  I wanted you to be aware of this in case you might decide to participate in some fashion.  But even more than that, I want us to pause and reflect upon the lives of people like Eunice Shriver who changed her times.  We all have the chance to make our world better if we jump in and try.  Is one life better because you lived?

Stay cool.  DOUG

Dear Friends,

For so many years my mother was fiercely committed to inclusion, acceptance, human dignity, and change. Although a year has gone by since her passing, her presence remains a powerful force in all of our lives as the work she inspired continues to grow.

In her honor, we are launching the first ever global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day. On 25 September, Special Olympics and Best Buddies will lead the world in a celebration of the inspiration, impact and indomitable spirit of Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS).  Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day is an annual celebration of her life and a global call for people to  carry out EKS ACTS - actions of inclusion, acceptance and unity for and with people with intellectual disability.

Last week, we sent out a global press release announcing Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day. We invite you to help celebrate her legacy by spreading the word about Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day, and making a commitment to take part this September.  How can you help?

  • Go to www.eksday.org to add your EKS ACT of Unity, and challenge your friends and family to do the same.

  • Re-tweet my announcement  (EKS Day is September 25th! Make your pledge to complete a Eunice Kennedy Shriver Act of Unity at www.eksday.org. #EKSDay http://j.mp/bTtv5u) and link to www.eksday.org

  • Spread the word about Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day by posting on your website or Facebook page.

Thank you for joining the athletes of Special Olympics and buddies of Best Buddies, the real heroes of this movement that is unifying communities and expanding opportunities around the world.  Help them honor the legacy of  Eunice Kennedy Shriver on 25 September.

All my best,
